My favorite homemade salsa.

And as I just typed the title....I realized that....although this is my favorite homemade salsa....it is, in fact, the only homemade salsa I've made.

So....I guess that makes the statement "My favorite homemade salsa" kind of a bold one.

But then again....I am just talking about salsa here.

Anyway.....I got this recipe from a friend of my sister years ago.

I have been wanting to share this recipe for a while now, but, it seems, most of the days that we make the salsa we are busy and I never have time to take the pictures and blablabla. But yesterday...I did.

So here it is. It's easy and so good!

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 Roma tomatoes (if they're big, you need 2, if they're small, get 3)

  • 3 tomatillos (go ahead and get 4 if they are really on the small size)

  • 6-7 jalapenos (here again...depends on their size)

  • about half of a yellow onion

  • about 3 cloves of garlic

  • about a 1/4 cup of cilantro

  • 1 teaspoon, each, of cumin and salt

How to make:

1. Wash all of your vegetables.

2. Have your husband cut in half and de-seed your jalapenos so that you don't get the jalapeno juices all over your hands....and no matter how many times you wash them....you still have the jalapeno juices on your hands....and then take your contacts out and have your eye burn and water profusely for about 10 minutes. I'm just saying. (OR....I guess you could just wear a pair of rubber gloves.) (IMPORTANT NOTE: Depending on how hot or mild you would like your salsa.....you can leave one jalapeno (or more, if you'd like) whole to add a little spice. If you get all of the seeds out, there really isn't any spice to the salsa at all. This also greatly depends on how hot your jalapenos are...but many times...you just don't know this!)

3. Take half of an onion and cut it into thirds...or something like this. I guess I cut them as if I was going to put them on skewers? (DISCLAIMER: this is not pictured, nor explained well, because I am not a food blogger and I do not know what I am doing).

4. Place the Romas, tomatillos, onion, seeded jalapenos, and garlic cloves in a large pot of water.

4. Bring to boil. Allow to boil until vegetables are tender.

5. Drain.

6. Place the boiled vegetables in blender. Be careful!! They are hot!! Use tongs, or something. :) Also- add in the 1/4 cup of cilantro, as well as, 1 tsp cilantro and 1 tsp salt.

(NOTE: We doubled this recipe, so really...your vegetables should not be almost overflowing out of the top. But don't they look good?)

7. Blend and serve!! I love it when it is so fresh and warm. But it stores in the fridge well, too. I have also made a big batch and frozen half....although- now we seem to go through 2 batches in 2 days. :)

I hope you try to make this. You'll never want the store bought again!

It's nothing fancy- but if you'd like to print it, I made it into a pdf.

YUM!!! I have to try this!!! I have to admit though, I have never heard of or seen a tomatillo! I guess I will have to figure out where to get it! :-)

I was laughing at the jalapeno pepper part, I have my husband do those too. LOL But actually I don't eat them. I like the sweet peppers. :-) Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting. I appreciate that. The cards are great, at the preschool age labeling everything is a plus for language development! Have a great day!
Blessings,
Jill
