Adventures in Sewing.

Yesterday evening, my mom sat down with me and gave me a crash course on sewing (just this quarter inch seam that I need to be able to do for the quilt) in less than 5 minutes. I practiced on a few scrap pieces of material and I was on my way home with the sewing machine in tow.

I felt so...so...proud.

Anyway...I didn't have the time or energy to mess with it last night...but this afternoon during Parker's naptime...I was on a mission. The lady who first demonstrated the tutorial on how to make this quilt said she did this in 2 days...I know I cannot expect to get the same results...but seriously...can it be that bad???

If you'll remember...a few weeks ago I received the material I had ordered for the new baby's quilt and started cutting it...and I was then ready to start sewing.

So today, I decided to pick up right where I left off...and laid all of the coins out in six rows...with 22 being in each row. I just wanted to double check and make sure I liked where the coins and the colors were distributed....

I made a few changes and began sewing....

The first 2 coins that I sewed together were perfect! Well..maybe not perfect....but a semi-straight quarter inch seam and with the fabrics both facing the right direction.

I think the excitement and adrenaline went to my head....because the next coin I sewed did not have the same fate.....sure....my seam was fine....but I had sewn it backwards!!!! The wrong side of the fabric was facing up....

I tried not to get too frustrated. I decided to leave the 3 coins pictured above alone...I would fix that problem later...and, for now, move on to the rest of the row.

Only....I did it AGAIN!!!!! This seam that is sticking up should be on the other side...with the backside of the fabric!!

Again...trying not to get too frustrated...I simply moved on. Alas....paying much closer attention to what I was doing...I sewed the next two coins correctly....

And the next one...

"Yes, Bob....we even have a 4th coin sewn correctly!!!" {applause from the crowd}

I got Geoff to take a picture of me because it was my first time ever sewing. And no...I was not smiling for the camera...but I started laughing at myself for how giddy I was that I was sewing and that I needed a photograph to benchmark the moment. I still smile thinking about it...haha

I even made him move in for my sewing close-up....

Do you think it looks like I know what I am doing???

Because I don't.

It only took a few coins later before I pushed the petal before I put the lever down and inevitably had to rethread the thread around the needle. So I got the instruction manual out...read it eleventy billion times and was still left with this....

....this unthreaded machine.....

After an hour....yes...one hour of trying to fix what I had messed up (something that really shouldn't be that hard to do)...Parker was waking from her nap.

So I took a picture of what I had accomplished. I guess the whole ordeal wasn't a complete wash.

I have a ways to go.... :)

Great Job! This blog really made me smile while I was reading it because it made me happy that you get as happy as I do about a sewing machine and a task!
