a little mother-daughter time....

On Wednesday afternoon...after my little sewing escapade...Parker was waking from her nap...and by this point...I am ready for my nap. Only...that's not quite how things work out, eh?

So when I was about to take her into our room to watch Blue's Clues so I could 'rest' my eyes while she was so deeply enthralled in this great educational show {insert a tad bit of sarcasm here}....I realized that I needed to do a few things before it started....

...I needed to start a load of laundry and pick up a few things that were just laying around. And with all of this being up and moving around...I decided that I did not, in fact, need to lay down and let Parker watch TV again... but that I needed to think of something fun and creative for us to do.

Ever since I found out I was having a little girl when I was pregnant with Parker...I did not always fantasize about the girly foo-foo room I could make for her...or the frilly dresses I'd put her in...or the cute hairbows I'd put in her hair. No...I got excited about doing things with Parker like cooking and baking and crafty projects.

And I decided last Christmas that I thought for sure by this Christmas she would be ready to help me with the baking.

So on this particular Wednesday afternoon...instead of 'resting' my eyes....I thought we'd bake these sugar cookies together that I have been craving for about a week now.

And these aren't just any sugar cookies. These sugar cookies come from this cookbook that my mom has had for about 30 years. I 'borrowed' it from her the other day.

These are the sugar cookies that we made together when I was a little girl. And I remember these particular sugar cookies because they are the first things that I ever remember baking....and they are delicious! They aren't flat...but rather light and fluffy and tasty and just the way I like 'em.

So here's the skinny on our baking undertaking....

To begin...a picture of Parker purposefully not looking at me. Classic.

I showed her how to unwrap one of the sticks of softened butter. Then I let her try...

She helped me sift the flour....

In addition to the sifting....she also found it necessary to dump the sifted flour back onto the paper plate....

...and anywhere else it just so happened to end up. Essentially everywhere...

Now it was time to mix the dry and wet ingredients. And since Parker had already 'practiced'...she actually did a great job dumping the flour mixture into the butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla mixture.

After she would dump some of the flour in...I would mix it together. In the next few pictures...she is tired of waiting for, "Momma's turn!"....and decided to 'stir' for herself...

While I started putting heaping tablespoonfuls of batter onto a cookie sheet...Parker started 'washing dishes.' It's one of her favorite things these days.

These next few pictures are an attempt at trying to merely get a picture of her looking at me. I'm not even that picky, I don't think, because I do not even require a smile. Just her eyes looking at me!!

Attempt #1

Attempt #2

Attempt #6

Attempt #7

Eighth time is a charm! I had to make some awkward, loud noise and a weird looking face. Something that no human should ever have to hear....and she looked.

I had to interrupt her 'washing dishes' briefly to put sprinkles on the cookies. I remembered putting sprinkles in the dough when I was little.....but my mom assured me that the sprinkles would set into the cookie if we put them on immediately after taking them out of the oven.

And maybe this is true for some...but this was not our experience. These little sugar balls went everywhere!!!! I bet I find some of these balls in a little nook or cranny when we move from this place! That makes me laugh {kinda}. :)

So I decided to mix the sprinkles in the dough....

The cookies were still hot...and Parker could barely contain herself. She wanted to eat one so bad. I told her they were hot so she started blowing on them.

Then she proceeded to tell me that they were "code" (cold).

And before I knew it...

Open wi-uhde!!

She lost interest fairly quickly...and was back to 'washing dishes.'

She's very thorough....

And my memory had served me correctly...these are my favorite sugar cookies ever! (although the ones from Wal-Mart with the pink icing are pretty hard to beat!)

We had a great time. But like all good things...they must come to an end.

And she was not so happy with my decision to bring her 'washing dishes' to an end.

Getting a little choked up here....

But hey....I got her to look at me while I was taking a picture! Haha!

I love this post. I agree with Kelli that one of those pictures needs to end up in your kitchen. I am so glad Parker got to help you cook. She looks like she was great help!

Great pics! Make me want a cookie really bad. I love the fact that she likes to wash dishes! That surely won't last!
